Once you have made the apology, don't expect everything to be immediately hunky dory. Blow them a kiss, get out of their face and wait to see if they forgive you; in that case they will be in touch. But it's quite ok to send them brief messages showing how you are miserably suffering from the guilt of having done wrong. In fact it's probably advisable.
