The inside of the glass heats up fast, but, glass isn’t a very good conductor of heat. So the heat travels slowly through it. The outside of the glass is colder. than the how hot inside is. The hot inner layer expands quite a bit, but the cooler outside does not, which puts a lot of pressure on the exterior of the glass. That’s what leads to the breakage.
