You will get laid off; this is more a fact of modern employment than of computing. I’ve been laid off (as in, my job went away; I wasn’t fired and replaced) three times, and it almost happened a fourth time. It’s not fun, but it’s survivable. It can play merry hell with peoples’ financial lives if they are not prepared, and their emotional lives (there’s no preparing for that), but it’s survivable.
