When the drummer plays a "groove” (think of a record player’s groove or the thing that guides the needle) the rhythm pulls you into the “pocket”. A good bass player can sit in this “pocket” and play, where everything lines up and locks into the drum pattern. It doesn't mean that the timing is strictly metronomic either. A good groove often “breathes” a bit.
