If they have facts that they can articulate for a court about why they had a reasonable suspicion that you were violating a law like drinking an alcoholic beverage under circumstances where it was not legal (underage, in public or whatever), then yes they can demand to see what's in the container and likely make the citation or arrest stick in court because they went from reasonable suspicion to probable cause to arrest or citation.
